With a custom dress or casual shirt from The Custom Shop, you have the ability to control the height of your collar. The front height is measured on the band of the collar where the leaf meets the band, going straight down through the button hole.

• - Custom Shop Standard is: 1”
• - Extra Low: is ½”
• - Low is: ¾”
• - High is 1 ¼” (great for 2 button bands)

Like the front height, you are in control. The back height, however, is measured on the back portion of the leaf of the collar.

• - Custom Shop Standard is: 1 ¾”
• - Low is: 1 ½”
• - High is: 2”
• - Extra high is: 2 ¼”

The point length is another detail of the collar that can be a critical factor in how the collar frames your face. People with longer faces have a tendency to look better in collars that have shorter point lengths. People with a more rounded face will look better with a slightly longer point length.

Most commonly, collars have a point length of 2 ½”

The tie space is the measurement between the two top points of the collar where the collar leaf meets the band.

Standard is ¼”.

With a 0” tie space, the two points will touch each other once the collar button is fastened. A negative (-¼”) tie space will create an overlap.

You can determine how stiff or soft you want your collar to feel.

If you like to use starch on your collars, we recommend selecting “Stiff”. This will allow you to move away from using starch and prolonging the life of your custom shirt. If you are designing a more casual shirt, then we recommend our “Regular” or “Light” options.

Collar stays are sometimes referred to as collar bones. These help keep the shape of the collar points.

Most commonly, removable stays are used in all Custom Shop dress and casual shirts. You do have the options of permanent or no stays at all.

One of the features of a custom shirt is the ability to make any collar into a button down collar. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and try a spread collar as a button down.

With more versatility, a hidden button down collar is a great choice and can be worn with or without a tie. With the buttons hidden from the outside world, you can feel confident that the points of your collar will not curl up.
